Temporary Hold |
The Federal
Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) announced that the Agency's "Access
to Neutrals" Initiative has been placed on temporary hold for budgetary
reasons. FMCS envisions creating a registry of qualified professional
neutrals who would be available to the public to conduct workplace dispute
resolution processes. FMCS will review implementation of the "Access to
Neutrals" initiative in fiscal year 2005. For full-time mediator

2003 - U.S. Suits Multiply, but Fewer Ever Get to
Trial, Study Says |
A new survey
shows that in 1962, 11.5 percent of all civil cases in federal court went to
trial. By last year, that number had dropped to 1.8 percent. And even though
there are five times as many lawsuits today, the raw number of civil trials
has dropped, too. They peaked in 1985 at 12,529. Last year, 4,569 civil cases
were tried in federal court. On third of all federal civil trials are
employment discrimination or other civil rights cases. Some believe that
fewer cases are going to trial due to the increased use of alternative dispute
